Leonard Rice Engineers, Inc. (LRE) is a consulting-engineering firm, providing services and expertise related to the planning, management, and development of water resources. We are currently seeking an entry-level GIS technician (0 to 2 years professional experience).

Job Description:
Create report quality maps using base maps and hydrologic data sets. The successful candidate will use ESRI desktop software to perform GIS map creation and spatial data processing for a wide variety of water projects.

Requirements:
Experience with ArcGIS desktop software, Microsoft Office, and proficiency in map design/creation, georeferencing, heads up digitizing, data management, importing/exporting data, spatial analysis, editing databases, working with map projections, and creating tables and charts. Candidate must be professional, detail oriented, dedicated to continual learning, capable of managing time, have strong communication skills, and knowledge of geology, hydrology, or other environmental sciences is preferred. A college degree is preferred.

Successful Denver firm is seeking a Senior GIS Application Developer for a 6 month contract with the possibility of extending.

Responsibilities for this opportunity will include the following:
• Working in partnership with other development personnel to develop and document GIT applications to serve internal employees and external customers.
• Developing applications in the ESRI platform, including ArcServer & ArcSDE.
• Preparation of detailed application support documents.
• Development in Silverlight, ArcObjects, and .NET.
• Acting in a team lead role.
• Fostering and maintaining good relationships with customers and IT colleagues to meet expected service levels.

The candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
• Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in computer science or related field; or equivalent education.
• 5 years’ experience developing business applications with desired exposure to both thick and thin client environments.
• HTML, XML, SQL, SDE, Silverlight, ArcMap, and ArcServer are musts.
• Candidates must be able to develop applications that integrate with external systems using TIBCO technology.
• Experience developing applications that store data in SDE on Oracle.
• Candidates must have complete understanding of the full life-cycle of software development processes, including documentation, training, testing and deployment.
• The ability to communicate verbally and in writing with all levels of employees and management, capable of successful formal and informal communication, speaks and writes clearly and understandably at the right level.

GIS / CLIMATOLOGY / WIND ENERGY

We are a leading global engineering, consulting and construction company specializing in infrastructure development in the fields of energy, water and information. We are seeking out an individual to provide wind engineering related design, analysis and studies for domestic or international wind energy projects from our Denver Wind Energy Office.

Primary responsibilities will include performing wind resource analysis related assignments for domestic and international projects. Areas of emphasis may include: utility-scale wind farms, community wind systems, distributed wind and offshore wind projects.

The position will involve:
1. A thorough understanding of wind project siting/development, general wind turbine design/function and industry-standard resource assessment techniques is required.
2. Experience in developing specifications and siting of wind measurement systems, including planning & execution of installations.
3. Experience in the statistical analysis of wind data, including raw time series data validation and instrument troubleshooting/diagnostics is required.
4.Field experience in performing or facilitating the maintenance of wind data measurement systems is required.
5. Contribute to the authorship of reports, studies and proposals.

Position may also require assisting with the development, planning, coordination and management of all aspects of wind energy projects.

Minimum Qualifications: BS Degree in engineering, physics or meteorology from either an ABET accredited program in the USA or its foreign equivalent. Must have the Engineer-In-Training EIT certification or its foreign equivalent.

Minimum of 3 years of experience performing wind resource assessments related duties.

Experience with GIS, climatology analysis and wind farm design software is required.

SUMMER INTERNSHIPS (paid)

REDLANDS, CALIFORNIA

Applications are now being accepted for Esri’s Summer Internship Program and the Esri UC Student Assistantship Program. Both programs provide great work experience as well as opportunities to network with professional GIS users and explore career options.

Internships are paid positions at Esri headquarters in Redlands, CA and a few of the Esri Regional Offices. Internships are open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Positions are available in a variety of areas, including Product Development, Professional Services, Educational Services/Training, Marketing, and Technical Support. Positions are generally 12 weeks long, starting between May and July, depending on the student’s schedule and hiring team’s needs.
Deadline to apply is March 18, 2011.

The UC Assistantship Program provides students an opportunity to participate in the International User Conference in San Diego, July 11-15, 2011. Students work part of the time, and have time to attend sessions and network with conference attendees. Esri provides conference registration and lodging (students pay for their own travel to San Diego). This program is open to graduate students and 4th year undergraduate students attending a college/university in the U.S.

On Reading and Asking Questions:
I often exchange emails or talk to the younger set on advice for getting a job. I try to focus on having candidates TALK LESS of their own skills, talents, and wonderfulness... and LISTEN MORE to answers to their "intelligent and insightful" questions they ASK potential employers. This enables the job seeker to understand the problem(s) to be solved. The task is to package yourself on-the-fly, to be "part of the solution the employer is seeking". (They already have lots of "wonderful people"... and they still have problems.)
Impressing employers can be more easily done by "quality of questions", rather than by "I am wonderful because ..." statements.
(Trust me on this one!)
And don't forget to read, read, read -- every day.
("Avid reader" always looks good on a resume and the investment of time will be well worth it.)
On Business Cards:
I have used VistaPrint in the past; they are free (except for shipping) and they are good.
I recommend you print your "individual" business card, unaffiliated with any company, and carry them with you.
Whereas handing out a resume can be rude and creates the wrong impression, a simple business cards says "I know the process."
A b-card is NOT a piece of promotional sales literature; it is a convenient means to convey your contact information (KISS).
But, you can use it to expand or narrow the responses you receive.
If your title is really "President," no one will talk to you; make it "Principal" or "Partner" or "Owner;" this opens the door.
If you specialize in one function, state what it is: "Technical Writer or Web Developer," etc.; this qualifies people.
If you are a generalist, provide a definition: "Regional Marketing Manager or Branch Manager;" this means you are approachable.
Avoid "Consultant," as it is often synonymous with "unemployed."
If you want to generate conversation, use "Entrepreneur" or "ROGUE;" it invites the question.
But, if you don't have your response path practiced and polished ... don't do this!
