Colorado has endured some major incidents and had three federally declared disasters these past few years. A number of people had expressed an interest in helping by utilizing their GIS skills during those responses. Here is a potential opportunity to do just that in the future.
I am working with a few people to help put together GIS support for at least one team during future responses. Once I determine the level of interest, I will be hosting a meeting or two in the Denver Metropolitan Area for those who respond to this interest announcement. These meetings will introduce people to the terminology, products, and protocols of response. If there is interest from geographical areas outside you maybe able to participate, and I will see if there is a path to channel those people to organizations (but I do not promise anything).
The ideal candidates have a solid GIS background and the ability to work under pressure. This type of working situation requires flexibility. The notice will generally be from 2 hours to 24 hours prior to assignments which will last typically from 2-5 days. If you are interested, I encourage you to respond. At this stage it is not a set commitment. Typically these are paid assignments, but that will depend on many logistical considerations specific to your personal situation.

The form has a number of questions. There are no right answers. This is just to give me an understanding of who is interested and where they are coming from.
Please understand this is a bit of an experiment- people expressed a desire to participate and I heard a specific stated need for GIS support. I’m working to broker the solution and provide needed training.
Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to seeing what kind of response we will have. I will be sending out followup emails directly to those individuals that do fill out the form. I will typically respond to emails in the evening hours.
Have a great week,
Victoria
