Position Title: Storm Hazard Analyst
Appointment: Four years.

General Duties and Responsibilities: The Storm Hazard Analyst (SHA) position has been developed in partnership between Texas A&M University and the National Park Service (NPS) to conduct storm hazard assessments for units of the National Park system. The SHA will work in close partnership with the NPS Geologic Resources Division (GRD), professional scientists, the Gulf Coast Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU) Liaison, NPS coastal park managers, and Texas A&M departments to conduct assessments of potential and actual large scale natural disasters affecting coastal parks. The SHA will assist with planning, coordination, technical assistance, and outreach. The incumbent will provide scientific and technical expertise in storm hazards assessments, coastal geologic and ecological processes and features, and ecosystem restoration. This SHA will need to be mobile and able to be quickly deployed to Parks for a minimum of 2 weeks. In post storm events, the SHA will provide data collection, spatial analysis, mapping and decision-making operational support.
Administrative Relationships: The individual selected will respond to Department Head of the Department of Recreation, Park & Tourism Sciences. The individual will work as a member of a team of experts deployed to parks after hurricanes including coastal geologists, compliance specialists, ecologists, coastal engineers, resource managers, social scientists, and academics to produce comprehensive coastal impact assessments and reports.

Qualifications: The SHA should have a Ph.D. or M.S. with equivalent experience that includes a major field of study in geology, geography, landscape modeling, spatial sciences, ecology, or natural resource management with a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) emphasis. The candidate will possess knowledge of the principles of coastal dynamics including impacts of hurricanes and large scale coastal and marine events. The SHA should be a mid-level GIS specialist with past experience in mobile mapping, desktop GIS, geospatial analysis, cartography, geospatial data collection and integration, and remote sensing - including but not limited to experience with ArcGIS 9.1, ArcPad, GPS, Trimble Pathfinder, Geodatabase fundamentals, and data dictionary development (mobile mapping). The ideal candidate will understand how to apply these data and technologies to best support operational decision-making in a crisis environment. Strong communication skills are required as this person may have to deal with a variety of individuals from Federal and State agencies for data collection purposes.
