GIS Programmer/Analyst
This position will be part of a small team which will be responsible for
re-engineering a nationally distributed natural resource application which
specializes in preparing tabular and spatial data for input into tree
growth simulation, fire effects modeling and other vegetation simulation
models. Output from the models is then processed using various GIS analysis
and display techniques. The existing application is an ArcView, Arc/Info
and Oracle application which will be redesigned as an ArcMap extension.
Additionally, new functionality will be added based on user requirements.
Required Skills include:
§ .NET 2.0/C#
§ ArcGIS (ArcMap), GIS concepts and analysis techniques (e.g. geoprocessing,
model builder, spatial editing, etc.)
§ Relational database use (e.g. SQL queries, relational database
concepts, etc.)
§ The ability to communicate orally and in writing as well as strong
inter-personal skills.
§ The ability to review requirements and assist with design of a
technical implementation approach.
Additional experience in ArcObjects, SDE, Oracle, application development
with shared component usage, and an understanding of natural resources
(e.g. forestry, fire modeling, etc.) is desirable.

The National Drought
Mitigation Center (NDMC) with the School of Natural Resources at the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln invites applications for a Data Mining/Geospatial
Analyst position.
The Data Mining/Geospatial Analyst shall assist a multi-disciplinary
research team in the development of new modeling techniques and applications
for drought monitoring. Primary responsibility will be to work with climate
and remote sensing experts to investigate new data mining techniques and/or
other statistical methods for developing enhanced drought monitoring tools.
These tools are based on the complex spatio-temporal relationships among
climate and oceanic indicators, satellite-based observations of vegetation
conditions, and other biophysical information as related to drought. The
individual will evaluate data mining literature and available software
packages and test new techniques for drought monitoring; customize existing
software packages or develop new data mining algorithms; and assist in
the development of techniques to visualize the drought modeling results
and web-based tools to disseminate the information to the public. The
individual will also work with researchers to investigate new remote sensing
inputs and other geospatial data sets for drought monitoring.
Applicants should have a Bachelors degree with experience or a
Masters degree in one or more of the following areas: climatology,
meteorology, natural resources, geography, computer science, statistics,
remote sensing or GIS (ArcGIS application development helpful), environmental
science, or related field. A strong emphasis on applied experience in
the above fields is preferred. Applicants should have demonstrated an
ability to work as part of a team and have excellent oral and written
communication skills. Good understanding of statistics or analytical techniques
such as data mining/knowledge discovery is desirable (experience with
MATLAB, SAS, and/or S-Plus is a plus). Candidates with experience in statistical
