The Long-Term Ecological Research site at the JER has one of the longest continuous periods of records in arid regions, extending back to 1912 while the site also has a rich remote sensing data base including aerial photography (which starts in 1936). In addition to numerous satellite data sets from various sensors, high resolution digital photography from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has recently been obtained. The position requires a Bachelor's or Master of Science Degree in fields such as remote sensing, GIS, geography, natural resources, environmental sciences, and engineering. Responsibilities of the position include cataloging, archiving, and processing satellite imagery and aerial photography, orthorectifying and mosaicking aerial photography and hyperspatial UAV imagery, analyzing and integrating remotely sensed, GIS, and GPS data, and assisting researchers with image processing tasks. We are working with data collected by Facet Technology (http://www.facet-tech.com/transportation/transportation.htm) and are driving the technical specifications for their collection systems. We also partner with Microsoft Research and our research team in Graz, Austria in order to develop on their results and explore future problem domains.
We are looking for self-driven developers or research developers who are interested in exploring new spaces, but still want to be able to provide results that the world can see on a semi-yearly basis. We are looking for solid design and programming skills in C/C++ or C#. An MA/MS or PhD in CS or math with a focus on machine vision, image processing or photogrammetry is desired. Experience with true ortho imagery, close range photogrammetry and oblique aerial imagery are especially relevant for this position.
