Tour of Duty: Full-time (includes benefits) for one year with possibility of extension depending on project funding and performance. The position is funded entirely from federal sources under the NPS Cooperative Agreement.

Duties: Colorado State University (CSU) cooperates with the National Park Service (NPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Division to develop and complete research and information management projects that benefit NPS and CSU. The GIS Division (GISD) is part of the National Information Systems Center in the Office of the Chief Information Officer, a Washington, D.C.-based program, located in Lakewood, Colorado. The GISD is responsible for planning and coordinating implementation of GIS to meet park and program management requirements for 390+ park units throughout the National Park System. In addition, GISD is responsible for the development, deployment, and maintenance of Service-wide databases and applications that allow park staff to utilize geospatial data and tools to support high quality and scientifically credible information products. The primary focus of this position is to develop, document, and maintain GIS and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) applications in support of mobile mapping, dynamic data exchange, and geodatabase integration among GIS field and enterprise services.

The incumbent's primary duties include:
1. Design, develop and maintain Service-wide ArcGIS and ArcPad applications including personnel geolocation and mobile Facilities Management Software System (FMSS) applications, using VB, VBA, VB Script, C#, Java, and/or XML/XSL with ESRI ArcObjects, scripts, and other software.
" Program ArcGIS and ArcPad scripts, extensions, interfaces, and stand-alone objects
" Program data exchange packages using appropriate programming languages and XML
" Develop/adapt MS Access databases to dynamically exchange data with GIS applications
" Develop guidelines and technical procedures for mobile GIS/GPS applications
" Provide technical assistance to other GIS/GPS developers working on NPS projects

2. Facilitate consistent data management techniques, technologies and integration with NPS, other government and non-government organizations:
" Coordinate data acquisition, processing and dissemination within GISD
" Facilitate consistent organization, access and protection of NPS data
" Provide technical support for systems analysis, programming, and database development
" Document database specifications and data dictionaries

3. Evaluate emerging technologies for mobile GIS and geolocation services within the existing data, hardware and software framework:
" Make recommendations for improved management of existing information systems
" Develop innovative techniques and flexible solutions to the challenge of managing
complex data sets from multiple sources
" Provide technical guidance and assistance for incorporating new technologies

4. Assume project lead and primary programmer role in development of NPS mobile GIS applications. This involves an understanding of all aspects and research requirements of the geospatial applications including personnel, program databases, existing applications, data requirements, data management protocols, GIS database models and software, metadata standards, Section 508 compliance and CSU cooperative agreements and projects.

5. Work and coordinate with NPS and CSU staff and assistants to document, duplicate, distribute, catalog, and archive geospatial research and program data and information products.

6. Share CSU and NPS expertise, data, and information resources with other researchers, cooperators, and staff working on NPS projects.

The incumbent's additional responsibilities include:
" Provide technical support for NPS GIS and GPS applications including integration with enterprise geodatabases.
" Provide training on GIS/GPS, programming languages, application development, and new technologies as requested.
" Work with and provide technical assistance for ESRI products, MS Access database applications, and other skills for NPS and CSU staff and cooperators working with geospatial information.
" Perform other duties as assigned by the project supervisors and cooperators.

Requirements:
-B.S. in GIS/Spatial Data Management or Computer Science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of two years demonstrated experience in application development using VB, VBA, C#, Java, and/or another object-oriented programming environment.
- One year demonstrated experience in complex data exchange programming utilizing XML/XSL, SGML, tagged/structured text, or other interchange format(s).

The Colorado Fourteeners Initiative (CFI) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect and preserve the natural integrity of Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks through active stewardship and public education.

Description:
The GPS/GIS Intern reports to the CFI Programs Coordinators and the USFS Peak Manager and will be responsible for GPS data collection on existing, proposed, and completed routes on Colorado's fourteen-thousand foot peaks ("Fourteeners"). The GPS/GIS Intern will work out of the Leadville Ranger District office in Leadville, Colorado and will spend approximately 80% of work time in the field hiking at high altitudes on Fourteeners throughout Colorado to collect GPS data. Approximately 20% of work time will be spent in the Leadville Ranger District office correcting GPS data and creating map layouts in Arc 9.1. Map layouts are used for trail planning and design and for USFS NEPA analysis. Qualifications and responsibilities are listed below.

Qualifications:
Applicants must be in excellent physical condition; be willing to hike and perform work at high altitudes; be self-motivated and passionate about the outdoors; have extensive outdoor recreation experience and a strong conservation ethic; be proficient in topographic map reading; possess strong computer skills; have strong written and verbal communication skills; and demonstrate proven interpersonal and organizational skills. Applicants must be confident in backcountry hiking, camping, and mountain route finding, and should be proficient in compass use. Technical rock or ice climbing ability is NOT required. GIS and GPS application experience is highly desirable. Please specify which GPS and GIS systems you are familiar with and how you have used these systems. Training will be provided.

Responsibilities:
• GPS data collection of existing, proposed, and completed routes on Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks.
• GPS data collection of control points, construction stake locations, trail structures, and photo points.
• Use of Trimble GEO Explorer 3 or GeoXT with external antennae for GPS data collection.
• Use of Pathfinder Office and TerraSync software for downloading and differential correction of GPS data, correction of errant points, and data conversion.
• Use of Arc 9.1 to correct errant points, screen digitize additional Fourteener routes listed in Fourteener guidebooks, and create map layouts.
• Use of a digital camera to photograph before and after trail construction areas and restoration areas for restoration plans.
• Assist with GIS database development and management.
• Assist CFI Design Team and the USFS Peak Manager with trail design.
• Other tasks as assigned.

Work Schedule: In order to collect Fourteener route GPS data statewide and process this data in Leadville, Colorado, extensive travel—with a personal vehicle—as well as evening and weekend work is required. The GPS/GIS Intern's fieldwork is physically demanding and much of the work is performed at high altitude. Many nights are spent in a backcountry (camping) environment. Applicants must possess own camping equipment and a valid drivers license. Certification in CPR and/or Wilderness First Aid preferred.

Housing:
There is no formal housing available in Leadville, however there is lodging at a primitive yurt (no electricity, water or toilet) just 20 minutes south of Leadville. Cooking, shower, and bathroom facilities are located right next to the yurt in a Forest Service building.

The Natural Sounds Program (NSP) is part of the National Park Service (NPS) Office of Natural Resource Science and Stewardship, a Washington, D.C. based office located in Fort Collins, Colorado. The NSP is responsible for assisting park units in preserving and monitoring natural soundscapes in national parks, and for developing acoustic monitoring and planning expertise in support of ongoing park soundscape management planning. The focus of this position is: 1) develop a relational acoustic monitoring information management system and populating it from legacy and ongoing datasets; 2) oversee the integration of non-electronic acoustic monitoring metadata; 3) create a GUI and database for an electronic metadata logging solution to replace written field logs. 4) participate in the development of automated data processing procedures.

The incumbent's primary duties include:
1. Become familiar with the design of a proposed data model for acoustic monitoring. Revise this schema, if necessary, attaining 3rd normal form and ensuring that NPS minimum metadata requirements are met.
2. Implement the data model in a SQL Server relational data management system.
3. Develop a means to collect acoustic data and meta data from about a dozen parks that have or had sound monitoring projects. Develop QA and batch processing procedures to move these data to the database.
4. Develop queries, views, and stored procedures to calculate summary statistics and other metrics for acoustic data.

The incumbent's additional responsibilities include:
1. Coordinate with other IT professionals in the organization to investigate the best technologies and appropriate security to implement a web-based application allowing NPS units or the public to query the acoustic datastore.
2. Maintain existing data processing applications written in VBA, Access 2003, and VB6.
3. Participate in the specification and development of other NSP automated data processing systems.

Requirements:
" Bachelors degree in the natural or physical sciences, computer science, information technology or a related field.
" Experience developing complex databases in MS SQL Server or a similar relational database management system.
" Experience managing large, complex datasets.
