GIS MANAGER (Part-time, temporary (15 mos.))
CENTENNIAL, CO

This is a part-time position (24 hours/week) with a military/defense client; their GIS resource is being deployed for 15 months.

GIS SERVICES
The client GIS Manager provides broad-spectrum GIS services to various
directorates. The services provided include, but are not limited to, spatial data
development and management, spatial analysis, and cartography. Installation-level
support in these three areas would be required to maintain an acceptable level of GIS
capability for the client. Contractor commercial GIS support to the client may
consist of on-site support at the client HQ and at Contractor’s location within the
Denver metro area for spatial data development and management, spatial analysis, and
cartography.

Spatial Data Development and Management
It is necessary for legacy datasets of the client to be converted to the SDSFIE 2.6
data standard. Metadata must also be added to these datasets compliant with the client
IGI&S Metadata Standard version 1. These legacy datasets will also be migrated to the
client Geospatial Database of Record.

Spatial Analysis
Periodically it is necessary for spatial analysis to be performed for recruiting and
retention purposes. This analysis will be conducted using demographic data provided by
the client Military Personnel Office and the client Recruiting and Retention
Battalion. Spatial analysis is also performed for environmental and facilities projects for
construction and sustainment. This analysis will be conducted using data and
information provided by the client FMO office and other sources.

Cartography
General cartographic support is required and will include support for environmental and
facilities projects for construction and sustainment. Maps will be created for either hard
copy output or a digital format.

Level of Effort
In order to provide continuous service to all entities within the client, a base level of
effort may include as a minimum two days (10 hour day) per week on-site commercial
GIS support at the client headquarters in Centennial, CO. The client generally
works on a Tuesday through Friday (4/10) schedule. It is suggested that under normal
circumstances the two possible on-site support days are Wednesday and Friday. When a
holiday occurs on Monday and the previous Friday is observed as the holiday, the on-site
days for that week will be Wednesday and Thursday. Contractor will utilize there own
GIS equipment, supplies and resources for this project. Additional support maybe
provided at Contractors metro-area office with the level of effort being equivalent to ½
day (4 hours) per week. This will equal a total of twenty hours per week of direct support
provided to the client.

Support Period
GIS support will be provided for the duration of the GIS Manager’s absence. It will be
necessary for at least two days on-site orientation support prior to the GIS Manager
leaving (if possible). The support period should extend two weeks beyond the GIS
Manager returning to work. It is anticipated the total period which GIS support is

Professional Development information from Cary and Associates:

Helpful Suggestions from Ken Turnbull, founder of Rocky Mtn. Rogues network:
On Reading and Asking Questions:
I often exchange emails or talk to the younger set on advice for getting a job. I try to focus on having candidates TALK LESS of their own skills, talents, and wonderfulness... and LISTEN MORE to answers to their "intelligent and insightful" questions they ASK potential employers. This enables the job seeker to understand the problem(s) to be solved. The task is to package yourself on-the-fly, to be "part of the solution the employer is seeking". (They already have lots of "wonderful people"... and they still have problems.)
Impressing employers can be more easily done by "quality of questions", rather than by "I am wonderful because ..." statements.
(Trust me on this one!)
And don't forget to read, read, read -- every day.
("Avid reader" always looks good on a resume and the investment of time will be well worth it.)
On Business Cards:
I have used VistaPrint in the past; they are free (except for shipping) and they are good.
I recommend you print your "individual" business card, unaffiliated with any company, and carry them with you.
Whereas handing out a resume can be rude and creates the wrong impression, a simple business cards says "I know the process."
A b-card is NOT a piece of promotional sales literature; it is a convenient means to convey your contact information (KISS).
But, you can use it to expand or narrow the responses you receive.
If your title is really "President," no one will talk to you; make it "Principal" or "Partner" or "Owner;" this opens the door.
If you specialize in one function, state what it is: "Technical Writer or Web Developer," etc.; this qualifies people.
If you are a generalist, provide a definition: "Regional Marketing Manager or Branch Manager;" this means you are approachable.
Avoid "Consultant," as it is often synonymous with "unemployed."
If you want to generate conversation, use "Entrepreneur" or "ROGUE;" it invites the question.
But, if you don't have your response path practiced and polished ... don't do this!
