Typical Duties: Provides GIS services and support to the department, responsible for the design,
development, implementation and continued management of the GIS program. Conducts GIS analysis,
prepares GIS applications, develops maps and associated documentation. Develops computer programs
using appropriate programming languages for GIS applications, designs and writes GIS computer
programs for verification of geographic and attribute data in GIS databases, designs and executes
GIS queries and analyses. Performs data entry, data verification and develops metadata for GIS
outputs. Uses ArcInfo, ArcView, ArcGIS and other software, Visual Basic and Java Script programming
language, a computer PC having a windows operating system and a variety of GPS equipment and other
related GIS software and equipment in meeting the department’s GIS needs.
Work in coordination with the department’s System Analyst to perform basic maintenance and
upgrades of computer workstation, operating system, GIS software and peripherals. Assists and
trains other departmental ArcView users to enhance their skills and abilities in basic GIS
applications.

Qualifications: Requires knowledge of the principles and practices of a variety of high-level
computer programming languages such as Visual Basic and Java Script. Requires ability to apply this
knowledge to diverse program areas to complete work projects. Requires skill in using ArcView and
ArcInfo and conducting queries in Oracle and Access databases. Knowledge of computer workstation
hardware, basic maintenance procedures, and computer network systems. Ability to design, test,
debug and implement GIS programs successfully to meet department program needs and complete work
projects. Knowledge of the concepts of spatial analysis and statistical methods to manage and
analyze geographic and database attribute data. Knowledge of Montana agriculture and basic natural
and environmental sciences desirable. Must have well-developed communication skills.
