DENVER AREA

At Latitude Geographics, we’re making the world a better place by helping people use geographic information to make better decisions. Our Geocortex division (www.geocortex.com) creates software and provides services that help customers around the world implement web-based GIS technology successfully. From emergency disaster response to long-term economic planning, we create and support technology to make complex GIS tools usable by non-specialist users.
We’re still relatively small (about 45 people), but we’re in a great industry, the future is bright, and we have an awesome team. We’re looking for outstanding people to help us continue to build the kind of place we’d never want to leave. From interesting, challenging work to corresponding recreation/life balance, we want you on board to help us achieve our dual goals of well-managed, sustainable growth and recognition as one of the top places to work in Canada.

The Position:
You will be required to work remotely because Latitude Geographics is a Canadian owned and operated company headquartered in Victoria, B.C. The demand for our products and services has increased significantly in the United States, so we’re searching for the right candidate to represent us south of the border.
Often you'll be on the phone contacting potential clients and handling inquiries, as you seek to understand how we might be able to apply our technology to help potential clients accomplish their goals. You will be involved with (or in charge of) writing small and large proposals, which often involves liaising with technical staff to design the right approach and ensure an accurate cost estimate.
You'll need to fly around the continent to conferences and other meetings, where you'll meet new people and present our products, services, and ideas.
Our goal is to become our clients' trusted advisors. This position requires that you build a relationship of trust with our existing and potential clients. We're in business to make our clients successful, not sell products and services at any cost.
Your first assignment is to sell us on you.

Qualifications:
• Proven ability to sell in the Information Technology sector
• Knowledge of GIS, geomatics, and internet mapping
• Familiarity with ESRI’s ArcGIS suite of products is desirable
• Conceptual knowledge of information technology and/or hands-on programming experience is desirable
• Great people skills
• Excellent writing skills
• Strong business-related computer skills (Microsoft Office Professional suite)

Compensation:

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM SEEKS COMPANIES to HIRE PIKE'S PEAK COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS

Pike's Peak Community College has a GIS Certificate Program that prepares students for the GIS field with VB database courses, intro to GIS, advanced applications in ArcView, and remote sensing and digital image processing. Several of our students have successfully moved through the program, and are now prepared for their GIS internship. Unfortunately, many of the partners we were relying on for internships are experiencing financial hardships. If you or your company has any upcoming internship possibilities, would you please contact me so I may help our GIS students complete this last portion of their program.

The PPCC internship requires 90 hours of GIS work to be completed at your facility, under the supervision of one of your employees. If the internship is to be unpaid, PPCC will provide workers comp insurance for the student intern.

These students are very enthusiastic and well prepared for entry-level work. They can perform the routine jobs and allow your firm to shift more advanced tasks to more qualified staff. Observing these student interns also allows your firm the opportunity of screening potential new employees. This arrangement also allows GIS firms the opportunity to provide feedback to PPCC on the validity and quality of skills the students are being taught.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Helpful Suggestions from Ken Turnbull, founder of Rocky Mtn. Rogues network:
On Reading and Asking Questions:
I often exchange emails or talk to the younger set on advice for getting a job. I try to focus on having candidates TALK LESS of their own skills, talents, and wonderfulness... and LISTEN MORE to answers to their "intelligent and insightful" questions they ASK potential employers. This enables the job seeker to understand the problem(s) to be solved. The task is to package yourself on-the-fly, to be "part of the solution the employer is seeking". (They already have lots of "wonderful people"... and they still have problems.)
Impressing employers can be more easily done by "quality of questions", rather than by "I am wonderful because ..." statements.
(Trust me on this one!)
And don't forget to read, read, read -- every day.
("Avid reader" always looks good on a resume and the investment of time will be well worth it.)
On Business Cards:
I have used VistaPrint in the past; they are free (except for shipping) and they are good.
I recommend you print your "individual" business card, unaffiliated with any company, and carry them with you.
Whereas handing out a resume can be rude and creates the wrong impression, a simple business cards says "I know the process."
A b-card is NOT a piece of promotional sales literature; it is a convenient means to convey your contact information (KISS).
But, you can use it to expand or narrow the responses you receive.
If your title is really "President," no one will talk to you; make it "Principal" or "Partner" or "Owner;" this opens the door.
If you specialize in one function, state what it is: "Technical Writer or Web Developer," etc.; this qualifies people.
If you are a generalist, provide a definition: "Regional Marketing Manager or Branch Manager;" this means you are approachable.
Avoid "Consultant," as it is often synonymous with "unemployed."
If you want to generate conversation, use "Entrepreneur" or "ROGUE;" it invites the question.
But, if you don't have your response path practiced and polished ... don't do this!
