Position Description:
The Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center (WyGISC) at the University of Wyoming (UW) is seeking a Master's level remote sensing specialist to conduct and coordinate a land cover mapping and change detection project for a portion of SW Wyoming. The successful candidate will have proven experience using remote sensing methods to classify land cover and land cover change. Additionally, the candidate should be knowledgeable about shrub steppe vegetation, ideally in Wyoming, but at a minimum in the Intermountain West. The successful candidate will be asked to 1) use Landsat ETM+, TM and/or ASTER data to map SW Wyoming land cover, 2) use Landsat data to map the extent of snow cover in this area for two snow scenarios (high and low snow years), 3) do change detection for this area at 5 year intervals back to the 1980s, 4) conduct preliminary accuracy assessment of the remotely sensed land cover products, 5) conduct field work and/or manage student field workers in support of this effort, 6) present findings at progress meetings and 7) write progress reports and a final report for the project.

We currently have funding to support the successful candidate for 1.5 years, although extended funding is possible through other grant supported projects. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications:
" An M.S. or equivalent experience in Geography, Botany or a related field
" Strong working knowledge of Erdas Imagine and/or ENVI image processing software
" Documented experience mapping land cover using remotely sensed data
" Knowledge and understanding of the vegetation of Wyoming in particular
or shrub steppe ecosystems in the western U.S. in general
" Experience conducting field surveys for land cover mapping
" Ability to perform strenuous field research in remote locations, sometimes requiring camping
" Experience coordinating research projects.
" Ability to work with cooperating agency personnel in Wyoming
" Excellent written and oral communication skills

Setting:
The mission of the Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center (http://www.wygisc.uwyo.edu) is to advance geographic information science research, education and outreach throughout Wyoming and the Rocky Mountain region. The University of Wyoming is located in Laramie, a city of 27,000 people situated at 7,200 feet above sea level on the high plains of SE Wyoming. Laramie has excellent recreational opportunities and is located about 2 hours north of the Denver metropolitan area.
