GIS Professionals and the Gulf Oil Disaster

We all now know that a large oil slick is emanating from a pipe 50 miles offshore and 5,000 feet underwater in the Gulf of Mexico. The oil is threatening Louisiana’s fragile coastal wetlands. The estimate of costs to contain and repair this devastation may exceed $14B (CNN estimate).

BP sub contractors have requested GIS Technicians with 1-2 years of experience with ArcMap to make maps from GPS data for the field crews to help in the oil spill clean-up off the coast of Louisiana. It is likely that teams of geospatial professionals will be needed to obtain a day-to-day accurate assessment of this emergency. The need for geospatial personnel will likely grow to much larger numbers over the next weeks and months.

In response GeoSearch, Inc. has mobilized their database and is using social media to identify those who are ready, at a moment’s notice, to travel to Louisiana and other Gulf Coast States that will certainly be affected by this environmental and economic disaster. As of this date we have identified 100+ individual contractors who are ready to utilize their skills to assist.

Professional Development information from Cary and Associates:

Helpful Suggestions from Ken Turnbull, founder of Rocky Mtn. Rogues network:
On Reading and Asking Questions:
I often exchange emails or talk to the younger set on advice for getting a job. I try to focus on having candidates TALK LESS of their own skills, talents, and wonderfulness... and LISTEN MORE to answers to their "intelligent and insightful" questions they ASK potential employers. This enables the job seeker to understand the problem(s) to be solved. The task is to package yourself on-the-fly, to be "part of the solution the employer is seeking". (They already have lots of "wonderful people"... and they still have problems.)
Impressing employers can be more easily done by "quality of questions", rather than by "I am wonderful because ..." statements.
(Trust me on this one!)
And don't forget to read, read, read -- every day.
("Avid reader" always looks good on a resume and the investment of time will be well worth it.)
On Business Cards:
I have used VistaPrint in the past; they are free (except for shipping) and they are good.
I recommend you print your "individual" business card, unaffiliated with any company, and carry them with you.
Whereas handing out a resume can be rude and creates the wrong impression, a simple business cards says "I know the process."
A b-card is NOT a piece of promotional sales literature; it is a convenient means to convey your contact information (KISS).
But, you can use it to expand or narrow the responses you receive.
If your title is really "President," no one will talk to you; make it "Principal" or "Partner" or "Owner;" this opens the door.
If you specialize in one function, state what it is: "Technical Writer or Web Developer," etc.; this qualifies people.
If you are a generalist, provide a definition: "Regional Marketing Manager or Branch Manager;" this means you are approachable.
Avoid "Consultant," as it is often synonymous with "unemployed."
If you want to generate conversation, use "Entrepreneur" or "ROGUE;" it invites the question.
But, if you don't have your response path practiced and polished ... don't do this!
