REMOTE SENSING SPECIALIST, FOREST RESOURCES
UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO
MOSCOW, IDAHO

Remote Sensing Specialist
(Research Technician)
Forest Resources

[Note from local contact Jeff: I was a Research Landscape Ecologist for USFS Research and adjunct faculty at University of Idaho prior to TNC. Having co-founded and interacted with this group for 10-years I can say that this is a fantastic research community. Although the job reads like a technician position, there would be considerable autonomy and ample opportunity for cooperative and independent research. Besides lidar experience; programming and strong spatial statistical and modeling experience is highly desired. I would imagine that a motivated individual would have many research opportunities outside of lidar related projects. The primary research focus is forestry and natural resource (wildlife, watershed process, etc…) applications. The position is at University of Idaho (in Moscow, ID) but is partially funded by USFS-RMRS, so it is a somewhat shared position.]

Helpful Suggestions from Ken Turnbull, founder of Rocky Mtn. Rogues network:
On Reading and Asking Questions:
I often exchange emails or talk to the younger set on advice for getting a job. I try to focus on having candidates TALK LESS of their own skills, talents, and wonderfulness... and LISTEN MORE to answers to their "intelligent and insightful" questions they ASK potential employers. This enables the job seeker to understand the problem(s) to be solved. The task is to package yourself on-the-fly, to be "part of the solution the employer is seeking". (They already have lots of "wonderful people"... and they still have problems.)
Impressing employers can be more easily done by "quality of questions", rather than by "I am wonderful because ..." statements.
(Trust me on this one!)
And don't forget to read, read, read -- every day.
("Avid reader" always looks good on a resume and the investment of time will be well worth it.)
On Business Cards:
I have used VistaPrint in the past; they are free (except for shipping) and they are good.
I recommend you print your "individual" business card, unaffiliated with any company, and carry them with you.
Whereas handing out a resume can be rude and creates the wrong impression, a simple business cards says "I know the process."
A b-card is NOT a piece of promotional sales literature; it is a convenient means to convey your contact information (KISS).
But, you can use it to expand or narrow the responses you receive.
If your title is really "President," no one will talk to you; make it "Principal" or "Partner" or "Owner;" this opens the door.
If you specialize in one function, state what it is: "Technical Writer or Web Developer," etc.; this qualifies people.
If you are a generalist, provide a definition: "Regional Marketing Manager or Branch Manager;" this means you are approachable.
Avoid "Consultant," as it is often synonymous with "unemployed."
If you want to generate conversation, use "Entrepreneur" or "ROGUE;" it invites the question.
But, if you don't have your response path practiced and polished ... don't do this!
